Suter Art Gallery

Yesterday we went to the Suter Art Gallery to see their exhibition MALU MINAR (SEA PATTERN )ART OF THE TORRES STRAIT. This exhibition celebrates the energetic work of Torres Strait artists. Each of the artists in Malu Minar have drawn on personal and collective knowledge, the instructions, guidance and lessons taught, instilling in them the strength and importance of their culture. The exhibition features headdresses, masks, dance machines, linocuts and textiles. While at the gallery, we worked in groups to make a mask using ideas from the exhibition. The children thoroughly enjoyed their learning at the Suter.

Folk Dance

During WOW week we learnt some folk dancing. The whole Junior Syndicate got to have a try. Folk dancing made us feel happy and we felt very puffed when we had finished. Look at us dancing.

Rhythm Interactive

Finally the day arrived for us to experience playing the African drums. We were very excited. When we went into the hall there were so many drums to choose from. We got to play them while we waited for everyone to get settled. It was very noisy. Have a look at us playing the drums. We learnt how to play rhythmic patterns by echoing the instructor. Next we are going to be making our own drums in class. We will paint terra-cotta pots and then put skins on them.

Reading Buddies

We are learning to be good readers by practicing with our reading buddy. When we read to our buddies, we have to sit beside them and read our books carefully. We know that reading is about looking and thinking. We need to listen to our own reading so we can notice if we we make a mistake and then try hard to fix up our mistakes by using some of the strategies that follow: 1: Re read the sentence and get our mouth ready to say the first sound. 2: Read on to the full stop and think about what would make sense in the story. 3: Use the picture to try and find a clue about the word we are not sure of. Look at us with our reading buddies.

Cross Country

It was our first time at cross country and we were very excited but also a bit nervous. We walked all the way to Nayland College and sat in our classes. When it was time for us to run, we got ready and Mr Power explained exactly what we needed to do. He told us to always try our best and to have fun. This is us just as we started our race. It was a lot of fun at cross country. We were very tired in the afternoon but felt very pleased with ourselves. When we got back to school we got to eat some of the yummy pikelets. There was lots of pikelet stations around the school. They were delicious. We loved the M and M pikelets best!

Blackbird Jet

My dad and I made this Blackbird plane. I brought it to school today to show Mrs Jimmink. When we got it, it was in a box. It took a long time to glue all the pieces together. By Bede

Spanish

Today Stella's friend Sophia came to our class to teach us some Spanish. She taught us how to say:

... "hello my name is ......."

... some colours and the numbers to 10.

The children were very good the numbers because Dora had given them a head start. Sophia was very impressed. We hope that Stella can bring her back to help us practice our Spanish again. Thank you Sophia. We really enjoyed your visit.

Home Learning

Here are a couple of photos of Kaide doing his literacy homework with his Nana, Carol.
We have chosen some words for him to visually recognise and once he can tell us without prompting he gets to put a sticker on the word! Julie (Kaide's Mum)

Profile Folders

On Friday we like to take the time to share our folders from kindergarten or pre-school. We enjoy looking at the things we did and sharing all of our learning with our friends in Room 12. Look at us sharing our folders.

Buzz Groups

In Room 12 we are learning to share our news in small groups called 'Buzz Groups.' In our groups we need to show respect by using good listening behaviour. That means we are looking at the speaker and concentrating on what is being said. Look at us sharing our news.

Welcome to 2012 in Room 12. We can now share some of our learning with you all. Thank you for getting your online permissions back to us.
