Discovery Time Fun

For Discovery time today we were focussing on working together to create something.   Brodie and Reuben made a big marble roll together.

Brodie said "I was going to fill up the marble roll with Reuben to the top but we couldn't because we didn't have enough balls!"

Reuben said "Brodie held the marble roll up for me while I put on the glitter things to help hold it up so it could stand up and not fall over."

We felt happy working together.

For our Oral Language talks Mahlon brought in the following.

What am I?

I have a face but no eyes, nose or mouth
I have 2 hands but not arms
I sometimes have feet but not legs
I usually have a round body
I make a noise but can't talk.

What am I?

Discovery Time

At discovery time on Fridays we are learning so many key skills.    The children are loving the opportunity to explore and create as they try new things.  Each week we have a focus skill to help achieve success.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to come and see Discovery Time in action on Fridays from 9.10 until 10.20.

Look at some of the activities we have been doing.

Mobilo creations by Mahlon

What happens when you blow a ping pong ball with a straw?

Technic Lego

What an amazing model.

Pipe cleaner octopus by Arabella.

Math's magic.

Magnet marvels.

A new bowling game to explore and share.

Hairy Maclary

We went to the Museum to see the Lynley Dodd expedition to celebrate Hairy Maclary's birthday.  We had lots of help from our parents to explore the pictures from the books.  We spent time talking about the dogs and studying the pictures on the wall.

Nicky at the Museum

After we looked around, we all got the chance to sketch part of any picture we liked.  We worked hard to complete our pictures using Nicky's special art pencils. We also got to share ideas about the different dogs we could see in the display.

Reading Buddies

Today we read our books to our reading buddies.  We need to work very hard on our reading so that we get better and better.  We are learning to use good fix up strategies to solve tricky words.  We know that reading is about looking and thinking.  When we come to a tricky word we can do these things.

  1. Re-read to help us think about the word.
  2. Read on to the full stop and think about what would sound right and look right.
  3. Look at the first and last sound and parts of the word we do know and think.
  4. Try the word to see if it makes sense.

Variety Show

Junior Variety Show
Alice in Wonderland

Our Variety Show this year was all about the messages we get from movies and stories.  Our message was that we can all work together and look after each other to find things.

We held our show at Nayland College and we did so much practice so we could shine for the big performance. We had to dance for the audience and we did really well.  We wiggled our tails out so everyone could see and the audience laughed.  We liked that!

After the show we played some games while we waited for our parents to come.  One game was called sleeping lions and Kaiya and Ayla won a juicie for a prize.  It was a lot of fun.  Mrs Jimmink gave us a lolly pop because we were awesome.

Eloise said "my ears fell off" but I put them back on and kept on dancing.

Reuben said "I liked wriggling my tail the best."

Matariki

We watched a story about Matariki to help us understand the story about the seven stars.

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades.  Traditionally for Māori when it appeared just before dawn in late May or early June, it signalled the start of the Māori New Year.  For some tribes, the rising of Puanga (Rigelin Orion) signals the start of the New Year. In the early 2000s Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission), the Ministry of Education and the Museum of New Zealand TePapa Tongarewa, became involved in the revival of Matarikicelebrations.

When is Matariki?

Different tribes celebrated Matariki at different times.  For some it was when Matariki rose in May/June.  For others it was celebrated at the first new moon, or full moon, following the rising of Matariki.  In the 21st century it is the new moon following the rising of Matariki that signals the New Year.
10 June marked the start of Matariki for 2013.

Sandpit and Swimming

Chloe loves swimming at school.

"Got them!" said Reuben

The big dig!  Well done Zidane and Reuben.

Fairy Bread

We made fairy bread on Friday.  We had to give really clear instructions to Mrs Jimmink so she could learn how to make it.

Here are the instructions;
1.  Take one piece of bread and spread butter on using a knife.
2.  Use a spoon to spread a good covering of sprinkles onto the bread.
3.  Cut the bread into quarters.
4.  Eat it.

"Delicious" said Shuun
The big thumbs up from Holly and Arabella.

Oral Language

On Fridays as part of our oral language, the children share their kindy or pre-school folders.  There is a happy buzz in the room as the children revisit their learning and share their journey with their peers.

Look at us sharing our learning journey.

Kya and Arabella are looking at Arabella's learning journey.

Zahrlis and Shuun are enjoying Zahrlis's journey.

The three girls are enjoying Holly's stories.

Reuben is listening to Brodie explaining his journey.

2013 - First Post

Welcome to Room 12 where we have been launched into learning.
Over the next few weeks we are learning all about how to be a great learner at Nayland Primary School.
We have some exciting opportunities coming up soon.  We are going to the Suter Art Gallery on 27th February.  Please keep this morning free as we will need some lovely helpers.
We look forward to sharing our learning with you all here.
